A new challenge for next week

I haven’t yet discussed this with Marc but I can do this in a way that everyone won’t know what’s going on. My challenge is to make it entire week, weekends included to eating at home and not go out to eat. The only exception to this that I’m going to have to break is I’m helping my friend Laci move. Her husband is in the Army and they are moving to Ft. Benning. I’ll be helping packing and she said that she will get a pizza for lunch. I’ll chip in for the pizza 🙂 But besides that little exception I’m going up for the challenge. The reason I would rather not tell the family is because we will end up going out and if I cook and suggest we grill out this weekend because we’re suppose to have nice weather and I want to grill out dang it. I might even make the little ants that I blogged about on the “what’s been happening” blog.

The main reason I want to take up this challenge is because we spend so much money on eating out. I’m sitting at the restuarant and yes it does taste better when someone else makes it, but I’m thinking to myself…I can make this. And I could make it without all the extra fat, sodium, etc, etc. We eat out alot on the weekends and I think we could save that money for something else.  Plus I’m getting tired of eating out and the same thing.

I’ll keep everyone posted on how the challenge is going.  I just need to make sure when I plan my menu for the week, I stick to it. Now I just need to figure out what to have this week. I’m open to any suggestions.

Until next time, happy eating.

Joined a book club

After living here for a year and half now I finally joined the book club that is in our neighborhood. I’ll be going to my first meeting this Tuesday, I’ll let you know how it goes. The book we’re reading is The Wildwater Walking Club by Claire Cook. It’s a new release that just came out last week. Claire Cook also wrote Must Love Dogs. I haven’t read the book, but I’ve seen the movie and love it.

There are 2 books that I’ve got to read and hopefully I can find them at Half Priced Books, we have a couple of locations here in San Antonio. I love this store, you can get used and sometimes brand new books at a lower price. Anyway, the 2 books I want to read are Sweet Potato Queen Big Ass Cookbook and Financial Planner by Jill Conner Browne and Being Dead is No Excuse: The Official Southern Ladies Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral by Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays. I read a sample out of this book and was laughing so hard because growing up in the South I could identify with what she was talking about.

What’s been going on

So it has been awhile since I last made a post. The past month and a half has been fun, exciting and down right scary.

In March we took a family trip to visit our family and friends back in Alabama. Of course I didn’t get to see everyone I wanted to see and you would think being there for a week you could, but there never seems to be enough time. Hopefully this summer we can plan another trip and visit with friends we didn’t get to see in March. While we were in Birmingham, Mary Margaret, my oldest turned 10 so we did get to have a wonderful birthday party get together with all the family. My brother and his wife Kat got to come with their precious little girl Madaliene…I’m still wanting to petition the court for custody…lol..jk.  I have 2 sweet precious girls of my own.

The scary part happened just a couple of weeks ago. Marc ended up in the hospital  in ICUwith pancreatitis. He was in a regular room Monday but Monday night he called me and said he had a severe allergic reaction to some nausea medicine. So needless to say that gave him an automatic trip to ICU. Thank God he is alright and nothing tragic happened.  A couple of days later he told some of his co-workers that I was mad because I could have been a millionare but the nurses saved him. WHATEVER!!!  He was lucky I didn’t kill then.  But as I said, he is doing much better, he just needs to watch what he eats for the next few weeks, nothing heavy or with to much protein.

He did get clearance to ride in a bike race that Sunday. He came home Friday afternoon and that Sunday he rode. My friend Kristina was up and she stayed an extra day/night with me. That helped to keep my mind off it. She was coming up anyway and just happened that Marc got sick.

I saw the cutest table decor the other day at my daughter’s school. It was volunteer appreciation day and they had a picnic theme. I’m going to have to make these and take a picture to show you. But here is the jest of it. They made ants for the table. It  looked like they took about 8-10 raisins and ran a toothpick thru them. Then broke off some more toothpicks to make the legs. It was the cutest thing ever. Now how come I can’t come up with something like that…oh yeah, I’m not the creative type.  For the placemats they used black construction paper and drew ants on them using white chalk or crayons and glued a “paper napkin” using decorative paper, they cut that into triangles. We had fried chicken, baked beans and potato salad, yum, yum. For dessert we had a delicious chocolate cake.

I’m still getting used to blogging and I’m still trying to figure out how this works, so please excuse me in my “green” stage.

Well today I finally got my TX drivers license…it took me awhile to get around and get it. My AL was still valid until the middle of this year and part of me was still holding on to that little part of AL. I still have family in AL and it will always be my home but I still didn’t want to make the time to go get it.  It didn’t take nearly as long as I thought it would and they were nice. Thank goodness I didn’t have to take another driving test…I don’t think I would have passed it without studying first….sad, very sad.

Katherine stayed in extended care while I made my little errand and I would have been done in plenty of time if I didn’t have my mentoring session this morning. But knowing Murphy’s Law if I didn’t put her in extended care I would have been there forever.

Katherine was upset because she really didn’t get to stay but an hour in extended care, so I promised her we would go to the park. She was happy and excited and we stayed there for about an hour.  We have this nice little park in our neighborhood. That is one of the great things about San Antonio you are never without some sort of play ground or area. Even a lot of the restaurants have play areas. It’s great on nice evenings to go out to eat and let the kids play and you can just sit back and relax.

Until then…

Hello world!

Well like everyone else in the country I AM SO READY for warmer weather. I moved to South Texas, San Antonio a couple of years ago and I’m getting used to weather here….but this past summer we had record-breaking weather of just about 2 months of 1oo degree temps. This winter has been colder than normal.  Hopefully this Spring and Summer we will have normal temps and normal rainfall. That’s another thing we were in a severe drought and I felt sorry for the families in the agriculture business. I have no idea how they managed.

The sun is out today and the temps are in the 50s we are supposed to be in the high 60s. I really shouldn’t complain because I”m sure there’s more than one person who wishes that they had temps in the 50s.

Winter is not my time of the year except for Christmas and New Years. I want it to be cold, but after that I want to start warming up again.

I’m just glad the days are getting longer, during the winter months when the days are short just doesn’t suite me. When its cold and dark outside at 5:30 all I want to do is just stay at home and not go anywhere.  I love being able to sit outside when the days are longer and the watch the kids play and my hubby grills something, while I’m having a nice glass of wine and relaxing.

Until then…..
